Bowel Cancer Awareness Month - Life‑saving poo!
The NHS bowel cancer screening kit is simple, quick, and could save your life.
Here’s all you do:
- Catch your poo (using a clean tub, cling film, or folded toilet paper)
- Use the stick to take a tiny sample
- Seal the bottle
- Pop it in the prepaid envelope and post it back
That’s it. One small sample can detect early signs of cancer — long before you notice anything wrong.
If you’ve been sent a kit, keep it by the loo and don’t put it off.
Most people get a normal result, but if something needs checking, the NHS will contact you.
If you need help: 0800 707 6060
More info: nhs.uk/bowel‑screening
Please share to help more people get screened. Screening saves lives.

Important Update: MMR & MMRV Vaccines – What Parents and Older Individuals Need to Know
From 1 January 2026, the MMR vaccine will no longer be part of the routine NHS childhood programme. Here’s what this means:
Children (Born after 1 January 2020 )
- MMRV when they turn up for routine vaccination
- Catch up campaign starting November 2026 for children who have not yet received a dose.
Older Children & Adults (Born before 31 December 2019)
- Older individuals who haven’t completed their MMR course and are not eligible for MMRV can still receive MMR catch‑up vaccination.
If MMRV is the Only Available Vaccine
If someone born on or before 31 December 2019 is completely unvaccinated and MMRV is the only vaccine available, it can be given, especially if they may not return for MMR or if immediate protection is needed.
What Is the Aim of the New MMRV Programme?
The goal is to protect children against measles, mumps, rubella AND chickenpox, reducing both the number and severity of infections. Countries already using varicella vaccination have seen:
- Rapid and dramatic reductions in childhood chickenpox cases
- Prevention of severe infections and complications that can lead to hospitalisation
What We’ve Learned from Other Countries
Countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and Germany already include varicella vaccination in routine schedules. Their experience shows:
- Huge drops in varicella cases and hospitalisations
- Over 91 million cases, 238,000 hospitalisations, and nearly 2,000 deaths prevented in the USA since 1995
- Reduced chickenpox transmission even among children too old to receive the vaccine
- No evidence of increased infection rates in older, non‑eligible groups

Note 1: if a child has not yet received a dose of MMR vaccine that they should have received, for example if they turned 12 months of age in mid to late December 2025, MMRV should be given and the dose of MMRV at 3 years 4 months is not required.
Note 2: there is no requirement for practices to check the history for those who respond to the offer.
Note 3: if a child has not yet received a dose of MMR vaccine that they should have received, for example if they turned 3 years 4 months of age in mid to late December 2025, MMRV should be given instead of the MMR which they would have received in December 2025. They remain eligible for the selective catch-up campaign which is being offered to their age cohort.

Our secretaries have recently undertaken some training in order to be able to refer patients to the Foodbank.
If you or your family are struggling to afford food, please don’t hesitate to come into the surgery and speak to someone about this. We are able to refer you for a food parcel, and this can be for however many people in your household need food. For housebound patients, delivery is available.
We are also able to refer to the Community Grocery – a social supermarket, based at Beaumont Fee, where for a small membership fee, you are able to go and do a shop for £5, £7.50, £10 or £12.50, depending on the size of shop you would like.
