As part of our commitment to preventive healthcare, we offer free NHS Health Checks to eligible patients. These checks are designed to spot early signs of health conditions and help you take steps to reduce your risk.

What Is an NHS Health Check?

An NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health for adults aged 40 to 74 who do not already have certain pre-existing conditions. It helps identify your risk of developing:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Dementia (for those aged 65 and over)

Who Is Eligible?

You may be invited for an NHS Health Check if you:

  • Are aged between 40 and 74
  • Do not already have:
    • Heart disease
    • Diabetes
    • Chronic kidney disease
    • High blood pressure
    • Stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)
    • Atrial fibrillation
    • Familial high cholesterol
    • Are not currently taking statins

If you are eligible, you should be invited every five years. If you think you qualify but have not received an invitation, please contact our reception team.

What Happens During the Check?

The appointment takes around 20 to 30 minutes and includes:

  • Height, weight, and waist measurements
  • Blood pressure check
  • Cholesterol and blood sugar tests (usually via a finger-prick)
  • Lifestyle questions (smoking, alcohol, physical activity)
  • Family medical history

You will receive a cardiovascular risk score, which estimates your chance of developing heart or circulation problems over the next 10 years.

What Happens Next?

Based on your results, we will offer advice and support to help you:

  • Improve your diet
  • Increase physical activity
  • Stop smoking
  • Reduce alcohol intake
  • Lower cholesterol and blood pressure

We may also refer you to local services such as smoking cessation, weight management, or exercise programmes.
