Our reception team can assist you in booking your baby’s first immunisations, the six-week baby health check, and the six-week postnatal check for mothers.

Following the initial appointment, our nursing team will schedule any further immunisation appointments in line with your baby’s vaccination schedule.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s health or development, please don’t hesitate to speak with a Practice Nurse or Doctor—we’re here to support you.

It is important that all women between the age of 25 and 65 have regular cervical smear tests carried out in accordance with the NHS cervical screening guidelines.

From 1 July 2025, the routine cervical screening interval has changed for some age groups:

  • Ages 25 to 49: If you test negative for high-risk HPV (hrHPV), you will now be invited for screening every 5 years instead of every 3 years. Research shows that if you test negative for hrHPV, your risk of developing cervical cancer is very low for many years.
  • Ages 50 to 64: There is no change — you will continue to be invited every 5 years.

The Birchwood Medical practice is encourages patients to attend for screening when invited. Some women may be asked to attend more frequently in individual circumstances. This procedure is simple and painless and will take only a few minutes.

Appointments are available with the practice nurses or GP at most times of the day. The best time to attend is in the middle of your menstrual cycle.

We offer both coil (IUD) and Implanon (contraceptive implant) fitting and removal services at the practice. If you're interested in either option, please speak with the receptionist who will assist you in booking a suitable appointment.
